What Lies for the Future of Really Cool Games for iPhone?

Beteo Games asked:

With more and more people having an iPhone, so is the increase in demand for quality and fun applications for it. As the age of ownership of the iPhone getting younger and “savvy-er”, Having really cool games for the iPhone is an era on the rise and an era to watch out for software developers. But where does the future hold for the iPhone gaming world depend on?

The App Store for the iPhone and iTouch has a list of really cool applications that can help either entertain, or help people make life more convenient, but iPhone gaming on the other hand has its own focus.

For the past year, or maybe years, it has shown promise to be in line with the popular gaming consoles in the likes of Sony and Nintendo.

More Practical with the Economic Issues without the Sacrifice of Fun

More people are finding iPhone gaming more practical and less expensive other than some cartridges. I think another reason behind this is that they can enjoy a wide range of games from all genres without paying too much. If a new game is desired, the flexibility of having a new one in a snap is what makes the iPhone gaming really cool and shows a lot of promise.

Fresh Blood

But other than the software developers that we commonly see, the generation that shows another great potential in the iPhone gaming is the rise of the independent software developers. Maybe unknown at present, but the vision of new exciting games from fresh blood is in indeed the next level in iPhone gaming. Remember that the main stream developers nowadays started somewhere, from being independent to where they are right now.

Cost-wise, independent producers can produce the same quality at a lower price while building a name and trust to their soon to be customers. And isn’t it great to have a first hand experience to a really cool game before it goes mainstream?

“Promise of Coolnes
s”

There are many developers out there, and most have that stage of lower quality production because they are just starting. I guess that is where boys are separated from the men. But there are few developers out there that create a “promise of coolness”, and one of those is Beteo Games. You can visit them at BeteoGames.com (www.beteogames.com)

Bradley and Bryan Cimo, pursues the applications and games development for Beteo, backed-up with 15 years experience. Indeed, Beteo Games is one of the promising game development companies to watch out.

Companies like Beteo games will show the iPhone gaming aficionados that cool, new and exciting games really come from anywhere. So expect more fun to come to the screens of your iPhone.

Computing / Gaming Buyer’s Guide

July 13, 2009 by admin

Martin Davis asked:

For those of you looking to console gaming on a budget, then older systems are definitely worth considering. Playstation 2s are becoming more common on the second hand market as more and more are upgrading to the vastly superior Playstation 3, as is the original XBox with owners again upgrading. Don’t always expect a lot of games as many sellers will keep a lot of their games to use on their newer consoles but you should still be able to grab a bargain or two. Games for both are still easy to pick up on the high street at knock-down prices so they’re still worth thinking about.

Onto the current wave of consoles and this is where you will have to give more consideration about what system you want to buy as each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Nintendo’s Wii is targeted more at a family audience as most of its games demonstrate and it takes a fairly novel approach to gaming with its innovative motion-sensitive controller. It’s certainly not the most technologically advanced of all of the consoles, hence its lower price, but it has proved to be incredibly popular. Because of the lower retail price, this is the cheapest way to get into “next-gen” gaming, but more serious gamers might be put off by the family bias in the catalogue of games available.

Since it’s launch the XBox 360 has proven to be a smash hit despite confusion over the different models available. It’s a very powerful system with the most extensive range of games available of all of the latest machines at present. There have been some technical issues with the hardware and reliability problems experiences by some users and there does seem to be an over-reliance on PC-style games but for the hard-core gamer this shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re on the lookout for a second hand model, your best bet here if you are looking for a machine as cheap as possible is the “Arcade” version of the XBox 360 which comes without a hard drive (which you could add yourself later), but if you’re more serious about gaming, then you are better off spending the extra to buy one of the other models.

The Playstation 3 is still something of an enigma to many. It suffered from a rocky start due to an incredibly high retail price, and a poor selection of games, hampered further by high game prices. This is changing now following the price drop and game releases seem to be coming out on a par with the XBox 360. The one concern that owners did have was that many early games were almost identical to those on the XBox 360, despite the PS3’s superior capabilities. This is starting to be addressed now so players will start to see the real difference between the machines… not to mention the fact that the PS3 is also a rather nifty Blu-Ray player!

As these hardware differences really start to become noticeable, you may start to see some XBox 360 owners making the switch to the PS3 (as was seen in the high street following the PS3’s price drop in late 2007) so this could start to see more second hand XBox 360s appearing on the market so it could prove to be a bargain entry-level machine if you want to join the latest wave of next-generation gamers.

Some second hand PS3s do turn up however but buying second hand is complicated as there are two models available. The current machine comes complete with a 40Gb hard drive, but the original model was released with a 60Gb hard drive. As well as that there are other subtle changes to the new model. The new version no longer has the memory card slots for digital cameras (although this is no great loss), there are now only two USB ports instead of four, and it is no longer compatible with Playstation 2 games. While Sony argued that many users didn’t need this feature, if it is something that’s essential then you are either going to want to track down the 60Gb model (which are selling for a premium price) or settle for owning both a 40Gb Playstation 3 AND buying a Playstation 2 as well.

One thing I would say is that – no matter what console you buy – is to make sure that you try to stick to the European models of the machines and not be tempted by a Japanese or American import. While some of these may be cheaper, you will have problems getting them repaired when things go wrong and most consoles are restricted to playing games (and DVDs) to a specific part of the world so buying Imported consoles could make life difficult for yourself in the long term.

For the older games players looking to reminisce over their youth, there is continual interest in retro gaming and while old computers and games consoles don’t tend to appear in classified adverts too often, they can be fantastic value for money. The obvious great bargains are the seminal classics Commodore 64 and Sinclair Spectrum along with the Sega Megadrive and Nintendo SNES. The great thing with retro gaming is that old consoles and computers generally hold very little value to anyone apart from those looking to buy them, so you can often pick up some fantastic deals, just don’t always expect all of the games and accessories to be in full working order!

Looking into the PC camp, prices of new PCs are dropping daily and hardware is becoming more reliable. While this is great if you are buying new, it makes buying second hand systems harder when you are looking to get a PC that will be able to run more contemporary software and nigh-on-impossible if you’re on a shoestring budget.

The first thing to always bear in mind when shopping for a second hand PC is what you’re going to need it for. I know this sounds like an obvious question to ask but it’s something that a lot of people don’t always think about and just decide that they want a PC and nothing else. If all you are looking for is a PC for simple home use (word processing etc), basic games and using the internet then you are not going to need a state-of-the-art computer and as such your budget will stretch a lot further.

While most retailers will push you into buying the latest all-singing, all-dancing PC running Windows Vista, you’re not going to need this if your needs are fairly simple. You should be able to manage with an older PC running Windows XP, a 64Mb or 128Mb graphics card, and an 80Gb hard drive. In terms of memory, 512Mb would be more than enough to suit pretty much any user for most casual games to keep the average family happy.

While a flat screen monitor would be a great addition to this sort of set-up, most of the more affordable deals would be likely to come with older style CRT screens but all of this shouldn’t set you back more than £200, possibly even with a printer thrown in from the right seller! If you do find a PC with lower specifications than those mentioned, it’s not too hard to upgrade cheaply.

For the serious games player who is looking for something capable of running more contemporary games then you are really looking at having to spend a lot more and despite its flaws, will have no choice but to look for a PC running Windows Vista. Whatever PC you go for here, you are going to need something with at least 1Gb of RAM, 256Mb graphics card and a 120Gb hard drive or larger. Anything less than these and – to be perfectly frank – it just isn’t worth trying to run Vista properly.

Laptops are a different matter altogether. They DO seem to hold their value better but you have to remember that if you want to run games, you are better off buying a desktop that you can expand as most laptops aren’t really suited for gaming other than casual or older games.

The obvious drawback with laptops is that once you have bought it, you can’t upgrade it so you have to be certain that the specifications of the machine you buy is exactly what you need from the start. Equally, from the start laptops are generally behind desktop PCs in terms of their capabilities in relation to the price you can expect to pay so you are already at an immediate disadvantage so if you even think that you may want to do more with your PC in the long term, then a desktop will always be your best option. Price wise though I’d say you’re going to be looking at about 25-50% more than the cost of the equivalent desktop PC including monitor.

Another point to bear in mind with laptops is how you intend to use it. If is meant to be your main day-to-day PC then you have to take into consideration that laptops can overheat very easily so they need plenty of ventilation, need to be used on flat surfaces and shouldn’t really be used for more than a few hours at a time without a break. This applies even more so with older models that have seen plenty of use as the components can wear out all-too quickly. Some brands are more susceptible to this than others but I have only found a few that seem to be able to cope with being left on for hours on end and work as a desktop replacement.

To be perfectly honest, if this is something that might be of concern to you then you might want to reconsider laptops as laptop repairs can be frighteningly expensive – especially if it is a fault caused by overheating – and will almost certainly cost more than the price of a second hand laptop!

I’ve barely scratched the surface with games consoles and PCs and haven’t even looked at PC software and accessories – those two would cover another article of their own – but hopefully this will give you a few pointers and steer you in the right direction when making some of your second hand computing / gaming purchases.

One thing I can’t stress enough is that when you do buy a second hand PC or games console is to try to see them working before handing over your money but as long as you can do that and just be aware of what you are buying and how much you’re paying, you should be able to develop your hobby further without having to break the bank.

Have fun!

Find Nintendo DSi handheld consoles online

Video Games asked:

ndo DSi improvements

The new Nintendo DSi console boasts larger brighter screens than its predecessor and two motion sensing cameras. The new screens are 3.25 inches versus the 3 inch screens of the DS Lite. The audio (mic and speakers) is also improved and with a set of headphones the DSi can double as a personal music player. The GBA slot (used for playing older Game Boy Advance games) has been replaced by a SD card slot for memory expansion. It also has a faster processor and Nintendo have managed to squeeze all of this into a thinner case.

DSiWare and Nintendo points

DSiWare is Nintendo’s online store for DS software where you will be able to download games and applications for your new DSi console. During a keynote presentation by Satoru Iwata at the games developer conference in San Francisco, Bill Trinen demoed a DSiWare game called WarioWare Snapped, a camera based Wario mini-game. In anticipation, Wii Points have been renamed to Nintendo points which can be spent on either Wii or DSi software

The DSi has already sold over 2 million units in Japan and is expected to do just as well in Europe and North America.

DSi stock and preorders

Three years ago the wii-console stock locator site was created to find Wii consoles in stock for people in the UK searching for this hard to find item. As well as tracking stock for other Nintendo products such as Wii Fit, the website also has a stock tracker dedicated to tracking stock for Nintendo DS consoles. These handheld consoles can be particularly hard to find in certain colours, especially at Xmas time. Now with the launch of the new Nintendo DSi console another stock tracker has been setup to help people find stock of this new handheld console from Nintendo.

Mmorpg Gaming Versus Console Gaming

June 18, 2009 by admin

William Murtog asked:

MMORPG gaming and console gaming have traditionally been thought of as completely separate and different playstyles. As the video game industry progresses however one can see that there are reasons to play both, rather than one sub-genre exclusively. This essay will go over the vast differences, as well as the universal traits that make both these forms of gaming complementary rather than contradictory.

One powerful trait both mmorpg gaming and console gaming share is that of escapism. Research has shown a strong connection between pain and anxiety. In fact, Nationwide Children’s Hospital has put this into practice by helping burn victims. The children play in this virtual reality to distract them from the painful process of healing from burn wounds. Although most would assume a virtual world such as World of Warcraft would be more immersive there are also console games such as Fable which would beg to differ. Here we see a powerful tool of video games, escapism, which unchecked can lead to an unhealthy obsession with the virtual worlds.

A driving force of the mmorpg gaming industry is progression. Progression via game is slightly diffferent but most deal with ones virtual character leveling up skills, stats, and equipment referred to as gear. This progression leads to a deeper immersion associated with most console games that can usually be played for a day, turned off, and turned on a month later. With mmorpg games however, the world around you continues whether or not you are progressing. If you aren’t progressing you are natually falling behind. This is a similar trait to a game we all play, life. An mmorpg is the highest form of capitalism and hard work pays off, whereas console games can be seen as a quicker escape with less progression goals. Console games have had single player forms of progression without the online aspect, also known as roleplaying games. Games such as Final Fantasy, Zelda, and even Super Mario. We see the ability for console games to have progression in the form of both virtual characters as seen in final fantasy and zelda, but only map progression in games like Mario wherein the character doesn’t progress, just the maps do. The inability for console gamers to personify there virtual characters has led to the explosive growth of the online pc mmorpg industry. With the advent of online play however, console worlds are now becoming closer to their cousin PC or Mac. One can look at the success of Halo and John Madden football on the console systems. It is the ability for quick fun but also combined with an everchanging leaderboard system to progress, to become the best player. It is this hybridization that gives console games the appeal of casual gamers which the mmorpg industry scares away. If one wants to load up a game of Madden for an hour they can do so and turn it off without fear of Brian Urlacher losing 5 tackling. If one does the same in Warhammer they may find themselves logged in with inferior gear and guildless.

Guild Pressure! Guild pressure is just like peer pressure only it’s intensified by players you mostly play with in your virtual world. In the past console gamers did not have to worry about letting someone down if they turned off final fantasy. Perhaps Cloud was secretly angry but he could never let you know. Today, not being able to attend a raid in World of Warcraft, or a PK run in Ultima Online can have social consequences within these heavily socially based virtual worlds. Turning down your guildmates can be difficult and even against your interest in the guild. In real life, if your boss asks you to do something because they rely on you, you would most likely help him/her out. The virtual worlds are no different. One’s guild leader may ask you to help camp a spawn or partake in a hunt; if the answer is no all the time you will inevitably lose standing with the guild leader, if not the entire guild. Before the onset of online console play, you made all the decisions and had no one, except maybe your brother/sister nagging you to turn on the game and play. Now even Console gamers have this social dynamic seen with Clans. Clans are synonymous with guilds but the term is used for most console guilds. If you are a member of a Clan that is ******** you better be sure to make the big clan matches. Let your clan down, you let everyone down. It is this mentality that is changing casual games to a more serious, ******** feel that PC games had exclusively for the past decade. You are now a part of something larger than yourself. It can be incredbily satisfying to be in a guild or clan and help those you care about, but it can be equally as hard to say no to those very same friends.

Both mmorpg gamers and console gamers have considered themselves separate. The reality is both gamers enjoy aspects of progression, escapism, friendships, and of course FUN! We forget at times the games are for fun. As a human species we are naturally hedonisitic so why not enjoy all forms of the video game industry? I’ll see you in World of Warcraft and a game of Tetris later.

Stephen Stillman asked:

Video games are pervasive in the lives of American teens. These teens include boys and girls, and teens from all socioeconomic arenas. Opportunities for gaming are everywhere, and teens are playing video games frequently. Teens who play daily typically play for an hour or more.

AMAZING STATISTICS

# 97% of teens ages 12-17 play computer, web, portable, or console games.

# 86% play on a console like the Xbox, PlayStation, or Wii.

# 73% play games on a desktop or laptop computer.

# 60% use a portable gaming device like Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, or Game Boy.

BENEFITS OF PLAYING VIDEO GAMES

# 65% of teens play with other people who are in the room with them.

PARENTS SHOULD BE INVOLVED!

Parents need to be involved in their teen’s gaming in the following ways:

# Monitor and approve the games they are playing. Don’t approve or reject just on the basis of  title. Websites that offer games give reviews on the games they sale so take the time to read the reviews.

# Monitor the time your teen plays. As indicated earlier, playing games has benefits, but like  anything that  is good, too much may create negative results.

RESULTS!

Video games are definitely a huge part of teen’s activities today. Every parent wants to keep their kids happy; and therefore, give in to this teen craze.

Pcs or Gaming Consoles – a Debate

May 30, 2009 by admin

Susie Symonds asked:

Digital games from the basic of tetris, super Mario, ping pong and other flash based games to massively multiplayer online role-playing games can be played for free or after paying some membership fees on both specialized consoles and on your good old personal computer (PC) Since gaming consoles have developed web capabilities between August and December of 2002, the debate on which option is better, has gained steam.

Given the enormous popularity of gaming consoles such as PlayStation 2 and Xbox, some industry analysts have suggested that PC gaming has seen its day and that consoles will be dominating force in future. But PC gamers have seen such claims biting dust since the days of Nintendo. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of gaming consoles.

Console Advantages

• Cost Advantage: Good PCs cost much more than the consoles. The Xbox currently sells for around $200, often with a couple games in the bundle, while it’s easy to spend that much or more on a quality PC video card alone.

• No Fuss: With consoles, just plug it in and start playing. No operating systems, drivers to deal with and to top it all, there is no more heartburn of finding a game incompatible with your system after buying it with much anticipation.

• Multiplayer gaming made easy: Just connect your console to Internet through a DSL or Cable Internet connection and get into a multiplayer game.

• Play where you want to: Play it on the couch, your bedroom, even bathroom with a gaming console. No more sitting on dedicated table.

• Easily gettable games: since consoles don’t have copying ability, the console games are more readily rented and returned to the retailer than PC games which are easy to copy.

• Easy learning: Console games tend to have a relatively low learning curve. You might need fast thumbs, but you certainly won’t need to spend hours in a tutorial trying to learn how to operate basic game functions.

Console Disadvantages

• Difficult updation: If some of the components inside the box become dated, the whole console need to be replaced to keep playing newer games. No remedies for that. This way you need to invest quite a hefty amount with each turn in technology. No such problems with PCs.

• Lack of versatility: Computers can do whole lot of things besides supporting online games. On the other hand consoles perform only one task really well. Some console manufacturers may try to make them a little more flexible, but it’s unlikely they will ever support near the selection of applications that is available for PCs.

• Lack of inter-connectivity: It is the biggest grouse against gaming consoles. There is a clear lack of inter-connectivity between the different console brands because of commercial compulsions.

When it comes to online play of flash based games or multiplayer strategy games for free, players can pit against each other only on a specific network of people playing on same types of consoles. There is no way for console gamers to jump into a fray on one of the countless servers available. The PS2 has made some progress in this area, forging the way for cross-platform gaming between PS2 and PC users, but only one or two titles support this right now.

Of course, there are many things to consider before deciding on a gaming platform. Foremost among these is deciding which games you want to play, how much money you want to spend, and whether or not you need a PC for other purposes. Go for a good computer if you want to do multi tasking, but for a die hard gamer nothing less than the latest console would do, would it?
